There are nearly 1 billion people who are hungry at this moment. Not hungry like the hunger we experience when we start to think what we might fix for the next meal, but the kind of hunger that eats away at their insides, consuming muscle mass and making them susceptible to disease. Nearly 800 million people lack access to safe drinking water. Without food and safe water, illness and epidemics have free rein. Every year 10 million children under age 5 die from lack of basic healthcare. More than 6 million could be save from simple, inexpensive therapies such as antibiotics for pneumonia and rehydration for diarrhea. One of the most effective organizations in the battle to save lives is Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Border. For the second year, Chic Management’s Culture Shock event is raising funds to support this life-saving work around the world.

Every charity event in Second Life has a few detractors. There are those who are uncertain about its legitimacy. That is not a concern with this events as you can see here, Culture Shock works in concert with MSF and MSF has its own avatar to receive the funds directly.
There are those who argue that these events make people think they are doing something when what they do is very little. That may be true on the micro level, but on the macro level, tens of thousands of dollars are raised.
But so what if it’s microdonations, the antibiotics to save one child from pneumonia cost only $0.30 cents. So buying one dress at Culture Shock can buy treatment for as many as 10 children.

Of course, there’s nothing to stop people from making direct donations to MSF. Charitable events do not prevent people from making independent donations, rather, they increase awareness and can inspire direct donations. Frankly, a good portion of those who will shop at events have their own charities, closer to home and heart, and supporting MSF is not on their radar. For many people, the money spent at Culture Shock will be money intended for pleasure, not charity, and so these donations are new money for the charity, money diverted by the generosity of Second Life’s creators and their customers to a worthy cause. Culture Shock is the very epitome of a win-win-win-win situation.
We, the customers win because we get to see the newest and best from 184 stores in a conveniently located spot and can discover new businesses in a simple promenade around the sim. The designers win because they have a chance to be seen and appreciated by new customers and they get the warm satisfaction of saving lives through their art. MSF wins because it will receive several thousands of dollars in donations from people who might never have heard of them or thought to support them before. Most importantly, hundreds of families whose fragile lives are threatened by famine, war and disease will win because there will be life-saving doctors, nurses and medicine to help them struggle to survive. So, open your hearts and your wallets and shop until it hurts at Culture Shock. It opens tomorrow and goes until May 26th, so you can spend lots of lindens and make a huge difference in the far corners of the world.

****SHOPPING LIST******

Unless you live under a rock, you know that Culture Shock is bearing down on you with the force of 1000 Fashionistas all clamoring to get in, to get the new, the exclusive and while they are at it, do a little good by donating to Medecins Sans Frontieres. That’s Doctors Without Borders to you non Francophiles.
As a Second Life community of shoppers, clubbers, gesturetards and so called fashionistas, we are a global community of privilege. Even the most broke ass of us seems to have a reliable high speed internet connection with which to connect to our pixel life and live out whatever our fantasy du jour is. (Mine is to be blonde and skinny. Please catch up.)
What I love most about our events that are charitable in nature, is that by just being our happy pixel selves and doing what we love (shopping) we have the ability to impact others. In this instance, rather than just donating to a charity we are actually making viable impact in others lives by supporting this group.
We are saving the lives of people who have only their first life to entertain them, and it’s usually a damn bit harder than any of ours. We are saving the lives of children who are loved by their parents, and families who will never know the luxury that even the poorest of us on the grid take for granted.

If I am a little preachy this morning, it’s because I believe in fact, that this is one of the finest charities in the world. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of others.
So go shopping at Culture Shock. It opens May 4 and you can find more info HERE.
We have the power to make someone’s First Life a better place. We should all do so.

Nyu has released this fabulous new dress for faMESHed, the new monthly mesh event. She made it in five gorgeous colors – and I could not resist the gorgeous green. So, today is the first day of faMESHed and I have been wondering how to pronounce it for some time. Should I take a cue from Otis Redding and think of it as the Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa MESHed event? Or is it Fame Shed as someone boldly asked on plurk. Or, as seems to be the consensus in my totally unscientific plurk poll is it fa-meshed. However you want to pronounce it, it will feed your hunger for mesh, if you’re famished.
Because May has events popping out all over, I am also featuring a couple items from Culture Shock which opens this coming Friday! The shoes are Pichi and are called Love Paris. The hud was a bit touchier than most, with what seemed like tiny adjustments making big changes, but with a bit of trial and error, a few dammits and only two or three resets back to the original, I got the hang of it and once that happened, it took just a minute or so to get the skin right. Even if it were harder, it would be worth it. I love these shoes.
The v-neck of the dress made me think of the fairly recent release from Kunglers called Recife, so I had to check. Seriously, they belong together like eggs on toast, peanut butter & chocolate and fame & shed. The fun litle haircut is from Dura, the sienna with a tiny bit of tinting by me.
And then there’s the incomparable Giselle, the new release from Glam Affair. Do you ever put something on and like it so much you just want to hug the person who made it? That’s me with this skin. As a red head, I am always thrilled when a skinmaker notices that we exist, but this is more than noticing, this skin is redhead love. Color me redheaded and happy!
And this is redhead happiness to the 12 power!
p.s. I have been informed the official pronunciation is famished – because we do hunger for mesh. But just for fun, think about how you WANT to pronounce it and answer the poll.

Hellooooo!
I’ve been away for one month ’cause my computer died and SL did not work properly on the laptop i was using while the new pc was being built. Now i’m back with my fantastic new computer, back to SL and back to blogging, yay!
I’m sure you guys know this fantasy skin from Glam Affair which is available at The Dressing Room, it’s absolutely stunning, I really love it, it was my first purchase after my return. Corset and leggings are awesome items from Favole that i was supposed to blog some time ago, but then computer issues didn’t let me, so i’m doing it now. The eyes are a new release from Mayfly, they’re wonderfully detailed mesh eyes (even though in the picture i’m wearing them without the mesh prims) and come in different colours.
Have a look at the cool poses, both from Epiphany, I highly recommend you go check them (and all the others) out.
Please forgive the shortness of this post, as i’m in a hurry, i need to go get ready for work.
See you soon!
Ciao

I do not understand why my cat thinks I have to wake up when he wakes up, but he is so insistent, rubbing his face on mine and meowing over and over and over until I get up. Unfortunately, he woke up at 3:45 this morning. I have tried to go back to sleep a few times, but without any luck. So, bleary-eyed and grumpy I logged into Second Life hoping to get cheered up. And of course, i was! The first step in the process of turning my frown upside down was putting on this romantic Beryl Dress from Nzuri. It’s a beautifully done empire waisted dress with a lovely pink skirt and floral bodice. The belt at the bodice is a great detail that elevates the dress out of the ordinary.

I added red pumps from Baiastice to echo the red in the flowers that are scattered across the bodice. A gorgeous bold ring with a red nightingale from Kunglers draws attention to the red manicure and lipstick that repeat the color story. A quick jump to Ode and all the flowers and I was feeling pretty happy.
The finishing touches include a classic updo from Dura and modern jewelry with malachite from EarthStones. The lush skin is from Belleza.

There was a slumber party at my house last night. I know there was because I have seen pics of it but my evening seems to have been blurred by shots and and the sleep of the dead. I’m not entirely sure what we did last night.
I seem to have woken up with my panties on inside out. That can’t be right. But I can’t be arsed to fix them. The cats are hungry. That’s what woke me up, the damned things texting me to wake up and feed them. Hush cats, mama has a headache.

The last thing I really remember was seeing these two…
And then I see on Plurk that later it looked like this…

I have no idea where it went from there…
See you guys later I gotta find some aspirin.
